No that's a book rather than a short story and what's more doesn't have any footnotes, at least not in the original, I've not checked the rewrite.

Better known than that. OK time for hint 2. As far as I can tell following a check of the book this is the only story in 'Once More With Footnotes' to actually have a footnote by Terry. It therefore deserves to be better known if only for its irony factor :D

Correction to hint 2, there are in fact 2 stories in OMWF that have footnotes by Terry, which an amazingly small number for a man so keen on them.

Hint 3 - It was originally published in More Tales from the Forbidden Planet.
