I've found Windows 7 to be admirably backwards-compatible and will happily run the original Quake, Discworld game, Hexen, Nethack, Clonk Endeavour and Liero with almost no issues at all - not even using compatibility mode.
It's a good thing the Discworld game has finally slipped into abandonware - it's a real pain when companies won't release their games to the public domain even though they're twenty years old and the company doesn't even produce them any more. Mostly they eventually realize that the only people that really want to play them are enthusiasts like us
