Twilight books, why?

Are these books some of the worst attrocities ever commited to paper.
I do not get why they are so popular? The writing is terrible and it is difficult to feel an emotional connection to the characters. The main female lead is so vapid and arrogant i want to punch her in the face and tell her to get over herself.
I feel it only fair to mention that i am only halfway through the first book and cannot comment on anything beyond that yet.

I do understand it is written for a reasonably young reader, but so are lots of other, better books. For example Harry Potter, Wee Free Men and the Hobbit.

Anyway what are your opinions?

Please feel to contradict mine, that is what healthy debate is all about, is it not?

I can't say that I've ever had the desire to read any of the Twilight series but click HERE for a fan's article* about how the film has been ripped off by other film makers. If that's the intellectual level of the audience that its aimed at, then I think I'll stick with Enid Blyton and Toytown. :lol:

It's escapism.
A nice little fantasy world for lonely romantics who've always wished for a Prince Charming to sweep them off their feet and save the day and marry them.

It's kind of sad that I can see that, because I once liked the series. (Only for a week.)

B) Margarine
C) Venereal disease
D) A disco of pain

Ummmm, two words:

TEENAGE GIRLS.

They are the most potent consumer force in the multi-verse at the moment. Reared on endless TV shows and videos extolling the virtues of adolescent romance and the mystique of "misunderstood bad guys," Twlight feeds this attitude like a rotting fence post feeds a termite colony.

Anyway. Onto Twilight. I have no idea why they're so popular. They just ARE. People say that they "re-invent vampires". No. They don't. They destroy them. In realaity, all thes 'sparkle-pires' have in common with vampires is pale skin. Face it. Technically they're faries. Edward Cullen is urealistic and gives girls an idea of an 'ideal boyfriend' that is IMPOSSABLE. This results in girls saying single because they are "waiting for edward". And so the twitard gene is wiped out. I wish.

Anyways. Enough ranting.The ONE good thing about Dimlight (as I've named it) is that it gets girls who would only read texts to read SOMETHING. And then they finish it and look for more cr*ppy vampire fiction. And maybe find something better. Ect, ect. And one day, they go to the Terry Pratchett section. *shoot me for sugesting this*

*regenerates* :P

This happened to my friend. it is possible.

note: Dimlight is not a SAGA. Nordic epics are sagas. Not soppy wastes of trees. Beowulf. Edward Cullen. Think about it, Stephanie Meyer.

note 2: What sort of name is Bella Swan anyway.

I am not a teenage girl, but have read the Twilight books. I read a LOT and I'd read the back of a bottle of bleach if that's all that was available. My daughter (who is/was a teenager) had the books, so I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it. :P

The first book is okay - nothing terribly exciting and it's not particularly well written, but I can understand its appeal. But if you're not hooked on this book, I would seriously recommend that you stop right there and don't even bother with the others. They get worse... and worse... The back of a bottle of bleach would be a better option.

They are making (or have already made, but I haven't really been paying attention) the film(s) of the fourth book, Breaking Dawn. Frankly, I'm amazed. If you don't mind the spoilers, this blog explains why the book ought to be totally unfilmable, except as a weird and x-rated David Cronenberg movie. http://aphnetworks.com/forums/topic/4204-why-twilight-breaking-dawn-must-be-made-into-a-movie/

Well I've never read the books, never seen a film, have no idea who the characters are and have no idea of the plots.
