Beware of Spam Personal Messages (PMs)

Postby Tonyblack » Fri Dec 06, 2013 5:05 pm

I have had a couple of reports of members receiving PMs from new members they don't know, often in Russian (Cyrillic) and with a link in the message.

These are spam posts DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS!

We have a safeguard on this site that stops new members from starting a thread on their first post without it being approved by a moderator. However, it seems that these spammers can quite happily post PMs to members without approval.

Hopefully we will come up with a countermeasure, but in the meantime, if you get a PM and you are unsure, do not click any links and either notify a moderator, or delete it if you are certain it is spam.

Having worked as a mod elsewhere, I'll lend my own experience here. Tony's right. Do not click on any links on unsolicited PMs. This leads to nothing but trouble. :|

I just got one from that spammer as well. Question: you say to delete them, but I can't figure out how.
I can't find that option.

If you open the PM, you will see a black X in the top right corner. Click on that and it should be deleted.

I would reiterate to all - do not click links in PMKs sent to you by members you do not know. If in doubt, let me or another moderator know about it.

Thank you for the advice. I received spam from the same guy. Ironic that it has brought me back to Terry Pratchett site - that's a plus for me after a long time away.

Watch out for PMs from someone named: "AndreswewTab".

I think I have put a stop to them, but they were sending PMs. If you get a PM from this spammer - DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS.

Watch out for Feneswealse and pymnempiste as well as they both refer to a notorious spam and fake goods site called longchamp in their signatures. This site appears to offer leather goods at very good prices but it is actually a counterfeit product and malware site based in China. You get shoddy goods and a nasty computer virus at the same time
One of those? Oh I'm sure I have one somewhere..

I would suggest you make sure your anti virus is up to date and run it also if you have any anti malware progs. like search&destroy, malwarebytes, ccleaner etc run them all.

It may not be malicious - these things tend to be about selling you things rather than downloading viruses. As Dug says: run any virus protection and anti-malware software you might have. And if you ever get anything that causes you doubt, be safe and don't click any links.
