Another print competition coming up next week and here are my entries;

"After the Parade"
Image

Nothing special about this pic of the Horse Guard's Parade ground other than the building's details are really sharp and I'm more or less using it to 'make up the numbers', so to speak. I'm guessing I'll get a 16 for this one.

"He Doesn't Suspect a Thing."
Image

A fairly simple portrait but I like the girls expression in her eyes. I did have to fill in the background as it was filled with clutter and very distracting.

"Splash Down!"
Image
I'll put my hands up and confess to outrageously cheating with this one in Photoshop. The photo was taken 'firing from the hip' type of thing as the bird suddenly splashed across the water and I didn't have time to compose it properly. As a result, the wings on both sides were cut off which is quite a no-no with the judges. I was bored one night and decided to have a play by extending the image 'canvas' on the sides, filling in the gaps, and cloning wing tips on. This is the end result. :D

Hi Penners, I like the middle one (the couple) while the Swan is good the wing tips don't look right, looking face on the right wing looks longer the the left one and the bluring doesn't help, it looks artificial not a speed blur, just an opinion I could not do anything near as good.

Thanks guys, I know what you mean about that wing but that was the best I could manage. Either way, it will be interesting to hear what the judge says about it and whether he can spot what I have done.

The Parade one is rather eye catching, Penners. Sometimes you do not need colour.

1,2,3, in that order!

Excellent as usual - even the wing tranplants!

I really like the sky in the first one - it "bodes" and I like the way the London Eye appears to be attached to Horseguards. But it's a little pedestrian (rather than equestrian).

I don't agree with what others have said about the swan. The blurring of the wings actually gives motion to the picture. Without that blurring, it would look somewhat odd. Sharlene and I were talking about hummingbirds and how most photos of them in flight have blurred wings. But in a way, that seems right - it's what a hummingbird is about. If you had a camera with a shutter speed fast enough to capture the wings still, it wouldn't look right.

As for the second picture- I'm really not that bothered about portraiture especially - but this picture really has something and it's down to the expression of the woman. I feel that if you had caught that expression a fraction of a second before or after, it wouldn't have the interest. The two expressions are almost polar opposites and the photo seems to tell a story that the viewer is included in, while the chap in the picture is blissfully unaware of. Nice catch Penners!

In order of preference I would go 1. the portrait 2. the swan and 3. the Horseguards. :)

I like the swan a lot.
After the parade is also good. The portrait is probably good as well, but I don't like it for some reason.

Penners - the swan is brillopads! Just point out that the swan's left wing (as you look at it) is held lower than the right and the extreme tip obscured by the wavelet a few inches in front of it Image. It works beautifully 'speed blurs' and all with the gorgeous splash droplets

Thank you all for the comments which are really helpful. :D

I have decided, in the end, to withdraw the swan as it is more an exercise in photoshopping rather than photography (I'd feel a bit of a cheat if it actually scored high). Instead, I'm entering this pic taken during an open air concert which was a lot more challenging due to the lighting conditions. The exposure levels have been adjusted slightly (which is normal for most pics in post-processing RAW images).
