You Learn Something New Every Day...

Postby Quatermass » Tue Nov 05, 2013 11:49 pm

Okay, let's start a new thread. The old cliche holds that you learn something new every day. So, let's post trivia and minutiae that we learn.

I'll start it off. I was bothered by a bird call, not knowing what bird was doing it. With some help from my mother, I learned that said bird was probably a Koel, a form of cuckoo.

A new way to make a cup of instant coffee....microwave half a mug of milk, top it up with boiling water from the kettle, then add instant coffee to taste. Been drinking this every week for years but only found out today how the lady makes it

Indeed, I can only think that Hasbro are trawling their product portfolio for anything they can adapt after the success of Transformers. I actually joked that Hungry Hungry Hippos would be next after they released battleship last year, but I should have known better.

I went to university today, so I learned a lot of new stuff. :D
One thing was that developing and registering a new excipient (substance that is in medicines but not an active ingredient - starch, lactose in tablets for example) is nearly as expensive and time consuming developing and registering of a new active ingredient.

They are also making a Candyland movie.

I dunno. I liked Battleship. the movie just screams, "the studio said we had to turn this dumb idea into a movie, lets have fun with it."

Speaking of movies. I learned Jurassic Park 4 will be called Jurassic World.

That Hungry Hippo poster is the funniest thing I've seen this week. Thanks Knight, I just put that as my desktop pic, should be good for a few days worth of giggles.

I learnt that spraying coffee on your pc monitor isn't fun to clean up.

Was it a spit-take?

I've just learned today that there is a serious book called It's Over 9000! I wish I were making this up. It's apparently an academic analysis of Dragonball Z by some guy called Derek Padula.

Does not surprise me. lol Serious analytical studies of various works of modern fiction is a pretty common occurrence these days. I know of a whole community of analysts over on youtube.

And I remember hearing about various colleges doing full classes on the theological aspects of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.
