The weather conditions were near perfect for them and at one point I could see five from my position on the river bank as they went about their business (mostly eating and fighting). Unfortunately, the pics I took of the fights didn't work out which was a pity since one of them involved a vole taking a bite out of a passing duck that got too close when it was swimming.
Tales from the Riverbank.
Come on, the coast is clear!
IT'S BLOODY WELL NOT, Y'KNOW!!!!!
Don't worry, this photographer's a wuss. I could 'ave 'im easy!
(I got too close to this one and my lens was unable to focus properly for many of the shots.)
OK. I'll ignore him then.
An apple a day......
I ain't sharing
(These two had a few fights as the one on the right kept trying to steal the apple from the owner.)
The spoils of war.
nomnomnomnomnom........Watch what you eat.
(This was actually taken much later on a different part of the river. I was quite pleased with the reflection and the overall pic as the light conditions were quite poor at this point.)
And don't forget to eat your greens.
(Unfortunately, it doesn't show up too well on the screen but this one has a largish leaf hanging out the front of its mouth.)
Fortunately, there weren't too many people around and I was able to get quite close to them (about 3 feet at one point) before someone came along and scared them away.
And just to please the bird lovers;
Get my best side please.
