That's a really great shot. You didn't happen to own a jacket with elbow patches, did you? :D

Not personally, but I knew one or two who did.

I'm adjusting a deep water Cerenkov detector that is looking for high energy cosmic rays. Underneath the metal surface is 7500 litres of pure water. High energy particles emit flashes of light as they pass through the water; these were picked up by a photomultiplier tube which was under the box of electronics visible in the photo.

What did you go and do that for :P.
Looks great. What kind of high energy particles were you looking for in those days?

Being partly responsible for scientific progress i personally am rather jealous of,nice pic(/work) Hnorwood! :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Well... It was a job(!) I got the post after I graduated, and as I didn't have anything else lined up, I went for it. A very interesting 3 years. I moved on (as we all do).

If you're really interested, we were looking at what are termed "air showers". The working theory back then was that very high energy particles (thought to be atomic nuclei) crash into the upper atmosphere and create a cascade of other particles - mostly muons if I remember correctly. These showers of particles pass through matter very easily, but being charged, they emit Cerenkov radiation in the form of light when they pass through a medium whose refractive index is greater than 1. If I recall correctly we were looking at primary energies greater than 10E16 electron volts (that's a 10 with 16 zeroes after.) About once a year we recorded an "event" of 10E20 electron volts or greater - the big cheeses got really excited about them...

Ok you can wake up again...

Yes -there's something "right" about that idea. I also like the law of conservation of reality, and wasn't there something about the universe being bloody-minded?

I rather liked the last part of the explanatory footnote to the first creation being a paperclip rather then the more expected hydrogen molecule in Eric :

“It is also apparent that creators sometimes favor the Big Bang method of universe construction, and at other times use the more gentle methods of continuous Creation. This follows studies by cosmotherapists which have revealed that the violence of the Big Bang can give a universe serious psychological problems when it gets older.”

Also from Eric this marvel :

“What’re quantum mechanics?”

“I don’t know. People who repair quantums, I suppose.”
