Very cool. and the price to get the smaller prints isn't too bad.

Though, I didn't know you could use kickstarter for projects using copyrighted characters.

I suspect Marvel would have something to say about it that wasn't: "sure, go right ahead."

Comic book characters have been a subject matter for artists for years

Absolutely, I used to copy them from comics when I was a kid. I was never good enough to create my own though.

Roy Lichtenstein did a huge number of works based on DC comic tiles and he made a mint.

I tried to look at the FAQ, but you have to log into FaceBorg to do that. And the Questions section is only open to those already backing the project.

Yes, but did he actually do any images of recognisable characters?

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great idea and I have always loved this sort of graphic art. I think the artwork this guy has created is excellent, but I just wonder if he is likely to come a cropper if he hasn't gotten permission.

True. He did sell at Comic con last year without Disney attacking him but we shall see.

I was doing a search of Lichtenstein's work and thought I'd found a picture by him of Aquaman. It turned out to be (ironically) a piece of artwork with Aquaman based on the Lichtenstein piece called "Drowning Girl".

While doing the search I came across this image that made me chuckle though.

Legal stance explanation

I thought about the same thing. I've attended the New York Comic Con since 2011...and thats all that gets sold there is Batman...Superman...things like that. But legally as an artist you're ok. Basically if I start mass producing lunch boxes or I try to make a movie of Spiderman, I can't do that. And I cant take another artists work so that's why I use toys/statues I own. I take pictures of them myself so I'm not using an image from a movie or cartoon or comic book. I know where Marvels stand is that they normally don't care because I'm not making millions and me and other artists are bringing attention back to their characters, basically someone might go see the Superman movie or buy a Superman comicbook. And they won't pursue legal actions because I'm really a nobody to marvel and d.c. But the legal term in the art world is Appropriation, and legally I wanted my art to fall within tthose guidelines. Basically you just have ot mak e the characters stand out in a very different way and in my case only Marvel and D.C hold the rights and its artists they fuel their community...they wont pursue me unless I start mass producing various merchandise...ha but yeah I was worried about all of this and really researched it and talked to comic book artists. Sorry for the long explanation! Thank you for the pledge!!!!
