Ideas for a very Ook-tacular birthday

Postby BillDoor » Sat May 11, 2013 3:29 pm

I do hope this is the correct place to post - apologies if it's deemed a needless thread clogging up the place!

My partner's birthday is approaching, and she adores the tales of Discword and the great man himself - this is as good a place as any to ask - are there any quaint Discworld themed shops, tea rooms, places to visit (in the UK!) regardless how different or obscure.

Would love to take my partner some where, regardless how small, to get another, alltogether different fix of Discworld. It would put a smile on face!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any and all ideas and are warmly welcome.

Many thanks in advance!

John.

The obvious place is The Discworld Emporium in Wincanton

I'd agree with Mad - a trip to Anhk-Morpork's official twin town to see The Cunning Artificer's shop in Wincanton would be perfect. Giving the shop a ring beforehand might be a good idea. ;)

Where it is.

Bless you both!

I had perused the Emporuim's site, not realising it was actually a based shop too.

Email sent! Many thanks for both your replies - any other ideas; I'm game!

Don't forget if you do go to Wincanton to come in via the A303. When you come over the bridge and then turn right towards town there is a large Welcome to Wincanton sign. At the bottom of the sign it says twinned with and right in the middle is the Ankh-Morpork coat of arms. Makes me smile every time I drive into Wincanton.

You could also book her (and yourself) a long weekend at next years Disc World convention in Manchester where you might have a chance to meet the man himself and a few others. I did my first one last year and had a fantastic time, meeting some great people as well as having a one hour coffee/tea chat with Sir Terry and eleven other lucky 'winners'. :D

Unfortunately, you just missed the Spring Fling event that was in Wincanton last weekend. :?

There will be the Hogswatch event in Wincanton at the end of November though.

What about that non-event thingy we donated to, where you get a cert, badge, wrist band?

Sounds like you have a fun birthday planned for her. :D Hope you have a great time in Wincanton.

Thanks all!

I've been in touch with the shop - really appreciate all the replies here. The added fun is, after we've been, I can show her these replies for an extra smile.

Oh, now I know; We. Are. there.

On a side note; the streets naming references, does anyone know how many there are? I'd like to map them out before hand!

Here's a story about the street naming. It's a new area of the town on its Kingwell Rise development at Deansley Way

Here's a Google Map of the area, although I'm not such if all the street names are showing there yet. :)

Aha brilliant, thank you!

Should just be fun walking around, bumping into roads which mean something!
