Many, cities/towns in the Americas & Australasia are named after European cities, largely because they wanted a little familiarity, then there are lots of duplications within same language places and regions due to the origins of the name. The ones that make me laugh though are the tautological place name though, such as the Sahara desert (Sahara means desert) or the rock of Gibraltar (Gibraltar is a corruption of jebel-al-tarik meaning the rock of Tarik) and there's a place in Cumbria that's name means hill hill hill hill!
If you can fill the unforgiving minute,
With sixty seconds worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a man my son.
