Here's a Stat Worth Sharing

Postby KnightOfFewWords » Wed Apr 17, 2013 1:32 pm

Breaking news: Victoria Beckham now pronounces her double 'L's correctly 46% of the time, up from 25% in 1997. The link is a report on a study "how changing circumstances affect the way we pronounce words". Their startling conclusion is that becoming extremely rich can make you sound more posh; maybe we should refer to her as Posher Spice now?

(Are the researchers from the University of Manchester making fun of us here? I always thought it was common knowledge that people's accents change over time as they unconsciously mimic the people around them.)

The one that I picked up when working in tourism alongside several scots and with quite a few Scottish customers is the use of the word aye in lieu of yes, but only when speaking to a Scottish person, even my nan, which annoys my dad, possibly because I don't really notice his accent

I've lost much of my cornish accent since moving away many years ago now - or is it more correct to say I've gained a more neutral English accent instead?

Either war you'd better get back there dreckly!

In the spirit of this thread in 2003 less people worldwide had been killed in recorded verifiable documented history than had been killed in one year in America in accidents involving toilets!

So does more money change your voice? I know that Nigel Kennedy went from very posh sounding to extreme Lundun the more money he got. And Cilla Black used to be a lot posher in her early career.

My dad lived in Cardiff for over 60 years and never really lost his Somerset accent and on my trips to the States I've gone from being mistaken for a Scot or an Irishman to a New Englander.

I haven't read the article but it seems kind of obvious to me, your accent can adapt to those around you, an effect that I expect will be magnified if you want to fit in and be popular. Therefore if you have more money and as a result start eating in five star restaurants all the time, start socialising with upper class people more then naturally your accent and lexical set will morph. As I said before, I've never really had the accent adoption but I have added words to my vocabulary and certain accents can trigger them. Also for example I can only remember my Spanish mobile number using Spanish numbers ie seis-dos-dos...... I then have to translate back into English if I am giving it to an English speaker!

Ah, but you see, money makes you sound posh, but fiddlin' on the old tonic and gin turns you cockney faster.

That's why I was surprised at the article, although possibly they were trying to trying to measure how much and how quickly. However, a pari of celebrities doesn't make much of a dataset, sounds like a joke or an attempt to drum-up publicity.

Nice anecdote. Memory is funny like that, it often works as a chain of associations.

Somebody once asked my dad "when was the last time you were in Wales?".

"I went there for a holiday once" he replied.

They thought he was Welsh. He was from Northern Ireland!

Yeah, this doesn't exactly seem like a revelation, does it?

 I'm kind of afraid to go to the bathroom now.

Heh heh They mentioned a stat on the news here once that said that the average swimmer at the beach is never more then 30 feet away from a shark at any given time. :D

But, before you declare your vow never to go in the water, pigs kill more people every year then sharks.

I can't decide if that is more likely to reassure people who are scared of sharks, or give people a phobia for pigs.
