A lot more so. We get an emissions test too.
Many years ago, I used to watch Pimp my Ride despite having no interest in cars. None of the cars they picked up in that shod would have passed an MOT inspection.
A lot of people get advisory notes addressing potential problems but you can be failed for any number of things from
Headlight bulb alignment (no dazzling other drivers)
Seat belt failure (as in it doesn't clip into the seat belt holdy thing)
Owning a VW camper
If you fail, you correct everything and put it in again.
