Coin a Collective Noun

Postby KnightOfFewWords » Thu Mar 14, 2013 4:42 pm

I've always thought collective nouns are one area the shadowy guardians of our language let their hair down and have a good time. 'A scurry of squirrels', 'a chattering of starlings', 'an ambush of tigers', 'a sloth of bears', 'a crash of rhinoceros', 'an unkindness of ravens' - someone has been having fun.

And there is nothing - unless the aforementioned guardians are a good deal more vicious and prescriptive than I suppose - to stop us inventing our own.

'A babel of languages.'

'A wince of bullocks.' (or 'A wince of steers' in US English.)

'A boast of braggarts.'

'A bereavement of jelly babies.'

'A cliché of soap operas.'

Would anyone else like to play?

A flattery of chat show hosts
A thunder of motorcycles
A whine of scooters
A deception of politicians
A starvation of supermodels
An aggravation of parking attendants
An asbo of travellers
An exhaustion of buses
A desperation of gamblers
An embarrassment of adolescents
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change? ~~ Oddball

A sizzle of martyrs.

A cacophony of percussionists.

A smock of peasants.

A patience of waiters.

A decathlon of commandments.

A rage of birds.

A korma of chickens.

A neigh of lasagne.

Can someone explain Ghost's second picture one to me please? All I can think of is 'an infection of bankers' and that took me a while, not sure that's right.

A seam of ladies-of-negotiable-affection.

A kiss of frogs.

A theological-prominence of popes.

A fuzz of pigs.

An archimedes of screws.

A wang of archimedes.
