Spit works really well. But wrapping a rag around your index and middle fingers and applying the polish in small circles, building up the layers of polish and spit/water is the way to get a really deep shine.

My dad was ex-army. AND he had worked at being a shoe repairer for a time.. AND of course he was a horseman all his younger life (saddles and such). And we always had leather shoes for school. So everynight we took turns to polish Dads work boots on the back step to a mirror finish (so he could head out the next day and work a full 9 hours on dirty filthy rail lines out west) and then our own shoes had to SHINE for school ! There was this wonderful "shoe-shine box" dad had made up when he was a carpenter as a young man. It had a heavy awl in it and all sorts of bits of leather and extra soles, and knives that could cut a person to the bone and beyond, and glues that had to be mixed and tacks and files. One part of it lifted out for the polishing and it had polishes and brushes and cloths and it smelt WONDERFUL.

Mind you ... we had not only the shiniest school shoes we also had the softest school shoes.

Many many years later when I was an adult mum and things were tight I was at my mums house (dad had been a long time dead) and my oldests daughters leather shoe came apart. I got out the shoe box and expertly repaired her shoe. She was astounded.

I wouldn't mind a quid for every shoe/boot that i've Spit and Polished, haven't done that for a while but i still polish my shoes especially for work..
