There's an odd mental quirk that I noticed in myself some years ago and that I suspect some others also have. I was alternately riding a bicycle and driving a car, and I noticed that when I was on a bicycle, I felt an attitude of "Of course they can see me," and when I was driving I was cussing out the bicyclists because "I can't see you if you're wearing dark clothes and have no reflectors, let alone lights." When I realized that I had both attitudes, I began to be much more cautious both as a driver and as a rider.

Got to Waterloo.

"Emergency Engineering Works at Wimbledon". (Turns out later that it was a broken rail).

No trains to Exeter (I get off at Axminster).

Have to get to Basingstoke, and pick up an Exeter train from there.

Problem - half the Basingstoke services were cancelled, and the other half were delayed. The train I got eventually left Waterloo just under an hour late.

Arrive at Basingstoke. Next train to Axminster - 2hrs.

Went to Basingstoke bus station to see if there was a bus service. Nope.

Back at the station, the train was due only 30 mins later, so not too bad.

Eventually announced platform 2, first three carriages only for Axminster. We all shuffle up to the right place.

........... changed to platform 4.

ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH.

Bouncy's post makes me feel very relieved that we didn't have any transport problems at all during our week in London. This trip would have been even more terrible with 16 tired and hungry teenagers in tow!
