It may be old fashioned Cheery but it's definitely significant in Hungary almost as much (if not more) as your actual birthday.

In Iceland you can only name your child from the official list of Icelandic names nothing else is allowed to be registered.

Yes, the first name is very important in Iceland as they don't really have surnames as we know them. Any children are named after the father so if dad is called Sven for example then male children have the surname Svenson and females are Svendottir and you don't change your surname when married. This means that mother, father and two children can easily have four different surnames. Unsurprisingly their phone book is arranged by first names.

Here you can only give your child a Hungarian(ish) name... you can trick the system by spelling a weird name Hungarian-like (for example I know someone who's called Mirtill, because she wasn't allowed to spell it Myrtill... or, my fav example, Dzsennifer instead of Jennifer...), but someone once told me they met a Marlonbrando and it was his first name... weird people out there...
Anyways, I'm called the way I am because it's allowed when one or both parents are not-Hungarian... lucky me

I know and I didn't say it was a bad thing. I like a bit of old fashioned and only wanted to explain the basic idea to those boardies to whom name days seemed to be totally new. The fact that it's old fashioned also explains why you won't find certain names in the lists - they're just to modern/foreign.

So true! We have an Icelandic friend with 3 children, 2 (a boy and a girl) named after her first partner (who sadly died) and the third child (girl) named after friend's second partner. I wanted to send a birthday present over to the elder daughter but had no idea what her father's name was (never knew him and had never thought to ask before). When I wrote the address, I assumed that putting our friend's surname on the parcel would be fine. Wrong! The Icelandic postman actually knocked on the door to check it was the right address as the surname didn't go with the first name - how the heck did he know that...!!!
