The Mid Life Crisis Thread

As some of you may know I have a VW camper............no really, I have. I know I keep it quiet

Anyhow, I was recently speaking to one of the mums of a friend of Ds and she referred to my beloved camper as "oh yes, your mid life crisis vehicle'! Cheek I'm not sure what offended me the most. The fact that she thought I was having a crisis or the fact she thought I was middle aged.

I bought the camper 3 years ago when I was 37.....does that qualify as middle aged?? I've always loved old VWs and had Beetles in the past.


So, I got to thinking. Now I am nearly 41, should I be having a mid life crisis? If so what do I need to do?

What have all you lovely people done or bought whilst having a crisis?

While I'm much too young for a midlife crisis, I thought midlife-crisis cars were more of the posh kind, with which you could impress young wimmin (dunno if that works, though, since you're more probably impressing other males of all ages and I'm not sure that'd be what most people with those cars would want ...).

I'm 41 now and not had a mid life crisis yet. I suspect that I probably couldn't afford one even if I wanted too. I'm not really into cars or bikes (I see them as utilitarian devices for getting me from a to b) so I doubt I would suddenly rush off to buy an expensive car.

Yup. I thought that this lady thinking that a different car choice was a mid life crisis said more about her and her lifestyle than about me.

I've always wanted a VW camper and it took me many years to be in a position to buy one. Even then I had to sell my 'normal' car to afford it and now use the camper as an every day car - it's not just a weekend car, kept pampered in a garage.

What got me thinking about this subject more was that I then walked past the barbers during my lunchtime last week and saw a chap coming out with an extremely over the top hair do - he was probably mid 40s and it got me thinking - did he have that haircut in a mid life 'got to have a change' moment of thinking? Could he not afford a flash car or motorbike and was looking for other was to express how he felt? Or had he always just looked a bit silly

Well I suppose jacking in a well paid job in IT and buying a teddy bear shop at the age of 49 could be seen as mid life crisis act. But what I really wanted was to get out of a young persons job, 24 hour system support and having to travel all over the place at a moments notice, not knowing when you will get back is no fun after 20 years of it. The problem was I was good at it so there was no way I was ever going to be promoted out of that position but I was heartily sick of motorways, airports and living in hotels.

I always considered the whole Mid-life crisis thing to be, not so much what you buy, but just doing things or at the very least having this strong desire to do things, you had always wanted to do when you were younger, but didn't. and maybe a little depression or feeling of being trapped in your life to go along with it.

there have been times with me in the last year where I felt like I was having said crisis.

Getting a sports car or powerful motorbike makes sense when you are older. You certainly couldn't afford the insurance when you were younger.

I'm 55 this year. I think I've probably missed my mid life (unless I live to be 110. )

I don't think I ever had a mid-life crisis as such. Unless you consider hoarding/collecting things that, but I am trying to curb this tendency now.

Don't feel like I'm middle aged, after all I'm not 60 yet. Think I'm going to skip middle age and wake up one day and realise that I'm old.

Seems perfectly sensible to me!How can doing something you love be a crisis?? Especially when you can natter away to your little friends all day?!


Personally, I've always understood a mid-life crisis to mean someone who is trying to recapture their youth. As I never intend to grow up, I will never have to face that dilemma!

Exactly!

When I think of a mid-life crisis, I think of people (men or women) completely ditching what they have, like their family, because they think they can live the life they did, or didn't, live when they were younger. They've somehow gotten the idea that there's something better out there for them, or more exciting - I don't know.

Changing careers or trying something new, or getting something you've always wanted, does not count as a crisis in my book. Usually when people get older they're able to afford things they couldn't before or have more confidence to try something they've always wanted to try. You watch - one day I'm going to be a stuntman.
