Jules, there is no such thing as an innocent spider. I lived in Alabama for about 6 months and the spiders there were the size of half dollars. There was always a stack of fat magazines next to my chair in the lounge. I usually threw them on top of the invading spider whilst standing on my chair. Then I would jump on top of the magazine just to make sure, finally using the broom handle to lift the magazine and verify the spider's demise.

Yes, there are! Ours here are perfectly harmless, even though one kind is hairy and can get rather big (translation for Australians: they are tiny) and I do admit that I am very underwhelmed when I meet them in the dark.

However, since our bedroom is in the basement (nice and cool) with stonewalled raised flowerbeds outside the window (PERFECT living space for spiders! And slugs!! Brilliant idea to have dry stone walls, Jules!!!) we're quite used to spider relocation events.
