Personal Status Update!

I'll admit I gave my children "normal" names because I dislike my not-so-ordinary name so much - many people can't spell it or they even call me something else - similar... but not quite. I don't bother correcting people any more. To make matters worse, my family call me by my middle name, which also causes confusion as those not in the know think there is another family member. No, it's still me!

I quite like the names you have chosen, Dave as they are all kinda linked together; Silver Elecktra (shining) Luna (moon).

Choosing a name can so hard. We went with "normal" names but looked for ones that weren't so common at the time. And they had to go with our last name which is kind of a mouth full.

I had to smile at your story about your own name Selkie. My mother in law's family is from Texas and none of them are called by their given name, and almost all of them have more than one nickname. I never know who she's talking about!

I've got an unusual name(for here anyway,don't know how popular it is overseas)and I like it .Although it's also very problematic 'cause I'm forever having to repeat my name ten times and the fact my mom couldn't really say my name properly when I was small,means I've been saying my name in a sort of warped way the whole time. I must just never go to the country where the name is from.No one will know I say my own name weirdly if they don't know how it's supposed to sound.

I have quite an unusual name myself, it's long and unpronouncable for the average Hungarian I think there was one time though when they wrote it correctly always surprising... but at least when a prof is summing up names, I always know when it's my turn, it goes something like this: Katalin Kovács (present!), Gábor Tóth (present!), András Fülöp (present!), eeerm.... ... (present! )

People get embarrassed sometimes that they forgot how to say my name and just try to avoid ever having to use my name.Instead of just shouting my name to get my attention they walk all the way to me. I suppose they think I'll feel offended they forgot.

My names are very plain, but have caused so much aggro over the years.

Mother wanted a girl called Jane, but also wanted to call me Philippa. However, Jane Philippa doesn't flow, so I'm Philippa Jane.

Everytime I fill in a form I get called Philippa.

Drives me mad. Mind you, I hate both names, so there you go!

I'm Mary, actually named after my gran who was Mary Ann (victorian). Don't know what's worse, brother calling me Mary Ann as a tease or the hundreds of people who quote that damn rhyme at me and think they are sooo original.

People very rarely get my name wrong (it's really quite ordinary), but it still happens. My married surname is always mispronounced at me though, even if I've just said it! People just don't listen If I was naming someone else I'd choose something uncommon, but still a name. Just in case it bugs them later on.

I think it's important to think of three things:

1) what Hank Green said about the focus group of 12 year olds. Children will find enough reasons to beat up your kid in the playground - why give them another one?

2) Your itty bitty babykins with the little tosie wosies won't stay that way. Think about whether you would take an adult with the name you have chosen seriously.

3) Don't call your child after the place where it was concieved.

I have a normal name, but an unusual spelling (for here). When my mom was in the hospital her roommate asked her what she was naming me, then said, "Well please spell it the proper French way then!" So, my name's not unusual but I always have to spell it for people.

I've never yet heard of any unusual names being: 'Bedroom', or 'Back of Alley'! Perhaps we could start a poll on the more unusual 'Places Conceived' names?

well - my point. You wouldn't call your kid kitchen table, so why call it Paris and forever emotionally scar your offspring by saying "because that's where we made you"?
