With all due respect to the departed, I thought that Shankar's segment in the Monterey Pop film was 15 of the most stultifying boring minutes in concert film history. He was also indirectly responsible for a lot of George Harrison's more pretentious songs. Sitar is one of those things that works best in very small doses.

To be fair...you can't judge him from one concert. Like any musician he changed a lot throughout his life. Actually moreso than a conventional musician as he spent his life developing new styles in combination with some of the very best in almost every style of musician from classical to jazz and more.

I remember seeing a doco many years ago about an amazing "school" he set up where musicians from all over the world could come and exchange ideas... and of all levels too. He truly believed music was fluid and got others excited about seeing where they could take it.

He was also a government minister.

He has been awarded the highest honours from almost every country in the world for his contribution to not just playing music but his informed and expansive discussion on many varied themes.

Let's not forget he is Norah Jones father ..
And his other daughter is a celebrated classical sitar player.

I always feel like stepping up on my soapbox every time the only reference to him is George Harrison.
