Broken Drum/Mended Drum

I had a mishap with my favorite drum yesterday,

so I took care of it today and here is the result:


It seemed appropriate.

Thanks to all for the nice thoughts, and the silly puns! The sound always changes slightly with a new skin, and keeps changing subtly for a few weeks until the head settles in and finishes stretching, but the air column remains unchanged, so the basic voice of the drum is unchanged. My new head has a bit of ring to it, but it will settle down when the tension evens out. I will tighten it further in a couple of weeks. This is only the second time I have reheaded my drum, and this one turned out much better than the first.

Lots of online sources - X8, musician's friend, djembe direct, Lark in the Morning, several more. The goatskins usually are treated (tanned) but still have the hair on them. Traditionally the hair isn't removed until after reheading, so you can leave the hair around the edge, which some people like to do. You can see hair around the edge of the head in the photos. In Africa, they use a straight-edge razor. Here we use Nair! You should see the look on the face of the checker when I buy three bottles of Nair.

Something like that, yes. Actually there were three of us reheading that day. Working together is preferable since there are times during the process when an extra pair of hands is mighty useful!

taken out of context three people and three tubes of nair it just seems wrong in so many ways
