Music Requests for Lords and Ladies?

Postby engineeringsimon » Wed Nov 28, 2012 9:35 am

Hello Everyone,

As some of you may know, I've written a few pieces of music themed around Disworld characters and scenes. A bit of a hobby I guess.

I've just finished Lords and Ladies and am thinking of writing something based on something or someone in the book (and what a book!).

I thought I'd ask for requests from fellow fans of the series. It would be interesting to hear some thoughts on the subject.

A couple of ideas I had were:
Theme for Magrat, especially her transformation into the Warrior Queen.
Love theme between Granny Weatherwax and Ridiculy
Love theme for Verence and Magrat
    Something for Nanny Ogg
    Something for the Elves

Any thoughts are welcome. The weirder the better.

I'd go for either the love theme (V&M), or the warrior theme. The first thing that came to mind was some festive music, like in the rennaissance with tamburins and flute... but I could just as well imagine Magrat as a warrior with a fanfare and lots of drums :D
Looking forward to hearing it, whichever it will be!
Listen.

How about something with a Morris Dance theme?

Lords and Ladies is one of my favourites.

The part I could always imagine music to is when the elves are stealing into the castle... so pretty... such pure evil ... their beautiful forms slipping through darkness with the moonlight catching their pale slender movements... so elegant and lithe... but with black malice in their hearts. Terrifying.

Before reading Discworld, I'd never really heard of Morris Dancing. I imagine it is a little like bush dancing in Australia.

Casanunda cracked me up every time he spoke too.

Shame the Feegles aren't in Lords and Ladies.

Nanny and Casanunder on the broomstick being chased by elves would make a good musical piece.

I always get disappointed when I read Lords and Ladies because I expect the Feegles to be in it. But it's Carpe Jugulum* that they are in.

I wish there was a way of unseeing it.

I think I prefer Gloustershire Cheese Rolling. It looks less painful.

I think Del's description almost perfectly sums up what I was thinking, except she put it into words much better than what I could. :D

We have Morris Dancing in Australia too, Simon :D

I reckon a Stick & Bucket Dance would definitely be something that would be cool for you to write!

I was in a stage production of Lords & Ladies in 2002 and it was brilliant. We got some local Morris dancers to come and teach us some steps, but the Stick & Bucket dance (the highlight of the show, mind you) was done /without/ music, mainly because a) we didn't have any and b) none of us could play an accordian or similar. Still, it was a very very funny scene (and involved sticks, buckets, and then putting the buckets over the elves' heads and hitting them with the sticks).

And noone, I said NO ONE, is to ever perform the stick and bucket dance EVER again!

(I played Bestiality Carter - in a dress - and was assistant director)

That would have been something to see...

I had another look at the jingly jangly stick whacking absurdity in the video above and I could knock something up, I reckon. The closest sound to an accordian I have is a dodgy, half broken, "melodica" of one of the kids. It might work though. Apart from that, it sounds like 2/4 at 80 bpm, and it repeats a bit. Chuck in a fiddle, tambourine, and some gratuitous sticks and we're done.

I like the awesome description of the Elves above though. I think I'll give that a go too..

Some quick research has led me to learn about the traditional Morris Dancing instrumentation of the Pipe and Tabor, so I will give this one a go. I have a soft spot for the folk tunes of the UK area, after all I am teaching myself the Tin Whistle among other things..

Now to think of some music for beautiful, yet evil, Elves.
