DWCon 2014 - Frequently Asked Questions

Date ~ 8th-11th August, 2014

Why has the date changed?
Because of Worldcon 2014 taking place in London in August 2014, and venue availability
Will it clash with Worldcon / Eurocon?
No!
But it's not a bank holiday...
Sorry... the first few Conventions weren't on Bank Holidays, and we felt it was more important to stay within the school holidays and not clash with other events people would want to go to.
Venue

We're going back to Manchester?
Yes! The first Discworld Convention was in Manchester in 1996. We've got a different (bigger) venue this time though!
Why have we changed venue?
We had lots of mixed feedback about the Hilton and felt it was time for a new place. We really love the look of the Palace.
What will the rooms cost?
Prices will be announced when membership opens. It's a competitive deal and we think you'll be happy with it.
Are there enough bedrooms?
The majority of people will be able to get a bedroom at the Palace. There will also be overflow hotels within 3 mins walk of the Palace, available at a good deal via us. Book quick to get a room at the Palace as soon as membership opens!
Travel to and parking
The Palace is directly opposite Manchester Oxford Road train station, which is 25 mins on the train from Manchester Airport. We have arranged some special parking deals which will be announced when membership opens.

Yes, health etc permitting as always.
Which other guests will be there?
We'll have more information for you when our full website is launched.
When can I buy membership?
We hope to open memberships by Easter 2013.
How much will membership cost?
This will be announced when membership opens.

Email info@dwcon.org and we'll see what we can do. Don't be surprised if the answer is "please wait", or "we'll tell you when we launch the new website/open membership". There is a lot of planning and organizing still to happen and we may not know the answer just yet.

Hmm 252 rooms so space for less than half the people attending assuming an average occupancy of 2 per room and in fact it would be less than that due to single rooms and the guests and committee also needing to be housed. This does not sound good

I suppose with the Palace being in central Manchester? it'll solve some of the problems people had with the Hilton in that you'll have more choice on where to drink/eat and how much you spend on that. The link in the top post gives other info including the hotel website and that looks pretty good so far as the conference facilities goes with a theatre space for 1000 and 850 for banqueting. The character of the building will also 'go' with the new Ankh-Morpork theme more than the Hilton ever could so I'm interested in seeing what kind of discount they'll negotiate when they open up membership for Easter 2013
