It's not the maps and badges, etc, that niggle me, it's the four or five different versions of the same book - Hardback, Paperback, Slipcase, Black Cover, etc.

For me, I'm only interested in the novels, and it doesn't matter to me one whit if it's a pristine dragonskin-bound tome signed by Duke Samuel himself or a coverless dog eared paperback found in a gutter - the words are the same. Nearly all the rest is just junk - the maps, the cookbooks, the various editions, the models and commemorative egg-cups, the plays and movies and audio cds, - it all seems like bells and whistles to me and I fail to see the point of any of it. But I don't blame Transworld or the model makers or indeed Terry - business is business and if some suckers are willing to pay real money for this worthless crap then they're going to supply the demand and thank you very much, do come again.

By the way I do have a limited number of genuine London rocks I can let you have for a very reasonable price, all carefully numbered and ranging in size from a pebble to housebrick.

To be fair, it's only really worthless to those who don't want/require it. Some people don't like collecting stamps and don't see the point in it - to others it means the world to them.

Except that they aren't the same. I have bought both the UK and the US versions for years because there have been changes made by the different editors. Theoretically they are only made to clarify unfamiliar words and phrases (the assumption seems to be that Americans don't know UK colloquialisms, which is wrong for the actual market, those of us who read British books), but in The Truth, a change in a comma made a significant difference in the characterization of a villain, and a significant one-word line was left out, which affected another villain. There were possibly a hundred other small changes that made no major difference. (So why did they bother to make them? The editors seem to feel they must change something.) I'm not talking about spelling but actual changes in the sentences; sometimes whole paragraphs are rewritten.

I have not bought the special editions, though I trust that all the UK-published ones are the same (except for the "added material" ones).

Without a doubt there are people who are thrilled to have so many things to add to their collection. Everyone defines the scope of their own collections and decides what's worth adding and what isn't. Saying that one level is acceptable and another isn't is like telling someone their choice of favorite color is stupid. What you think about it doesn't matter.

What I would find frustrating is when special things were offered with the purchase. For example, in order to get that special postcard I'd have to buy the UK signed, slipcase edition and pay overseas postage. I want the postcard, not the book. In most cases I found an easy work around, but in that sense it could be a little frustrating.
