It's pretty desperate damage limitation - the fact that one of the b*stards committed suicide and the other's already been jailed means they're trying to claw back a reduction on the fine and costs of the civil action these students will have against the District administration that should have protected them (or at least done more to support them). There's every chance they'll incur a heavier penalty and censure by prolonging the agony in taking this moronic line of 'defence'.

The man prays for two years for his wife to recover from cancer, and then attributes her recovery to Jesus. In gratitude, he cleans the crucifix statue, which falls on him and crushes his leg. Apparently, in spite of his faith, there was no miraculous healing power in that statue, since his leg had to be amputated. And, rather assume that his accident, like his wife's recovery, was the 'will of Jesus,' he instead sues the church.
