The puppy?!! :D

That's so sweet of you! But I would hate to put you through the trouble. She just really stumped me on that one. I was really surprised that I couldn't find anything at the library.

They weren't all about 'bad' things. They ruled much of Britain at one time and that wasn't in a hostile way.

This Wiki on Danelaw will give you some idea of the influence they had on Britain. :)

I started reading Vagabond today it made me smile that before the battle of Neville's Cross someone asks if it's true that the Scots paint their faces blue. One of characters has never heard of it and it thinks it's nonsense. :)

If anyone in Britain ever painted their faces with blue dye (possibly wode), it was during the Roman occupation of Britain. And even then there's no real evidence of it. :)

That bit in Vagabond always makes me chuckle because I know what Bernard Cornwell thinks of Mel Gibson's films.

Agreed.
As far as I know, the Picts (hence the name) were the ones painting their faces - a long time before even the great-great-grandfather of Mel Gibson was born.

Yup,as far as I know too.The Scots as such didn´t do that,it was the "aboriginees" of Scotland who did that, the picts. They tried to scare the invaders (the nowadays Scots) away.Didn´t work though.
It´s still magic even if you know how it´s done.

"Woad" - also something Jonathan Ross and Roy Hodgson drive on. ;)
