RIP Sen. Arlen Specter, Moderate Voice of Reason

Postby swreader » Mon Oct 15, 2012 4:59 pm

I was saddened to read last night of the passing of Arlen Specter, former Senator from Massachusetts. He was, until recently, the Republican senator from Pennsylvania. And he embodied what the Republican party (both in Pennsylvania and nationally) seems to have lost -- a sense of fairness, a willingness to compromise, and a true concern for the welfare of all the citizens of this country (not just the rich). Centrist Sen. Specter died fighting for moderation is a link to a good review of the accomplishments of (until recently) the longest serving Senator. RIP, Senator--you will be missed. :(

Agree with you. One of the few 'good Republicans' out there. Although he never served as a senator from Massachusetts.

Oops Jeff!-- I was thinking of you in Mass.--but the Senator was from Pennsylvania! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Until MA went insane and voted in Scott Brown, a republican like Specter probably might have easily won election in MA. We were known for electing moderate Republicans from time to time--like Mitt Romney, who compared to most Republicans was actually pretty moderate when he was governor (although I never voted for the scumbag). He only became a right winger when it suited his chameleonlike political purposes.
