I've probably asked this before, but what the heck.
Can you play Region 1 DVDs on a laptop, or does it have to be re-jiggered/coded like DVD players do?

You can change the region on a laptop a certain number of times but it can only be one region at a time . Not worth changing it to Region 1 for one dvd to be honest

I agree with Pip. I have occasionally found a DVD in a charity shop only to find, when I try to play it, it's Region 1. Possibly people buying DVDs in America on their holidays only to find they don't work when they get back.
But as I travel to the US and as Sharlene has a multi-region DVD player, it's not a problem.

I'm just a tad annoyed that a US show that I think I might like (The Glades) is only available on Region 1 at the moment.

While you can't play it on the laptop you can still rip it and convert to AVI files 
FairUse (free download) software would do it and it would be a way around it if you're impatient Or get a multi region DVD player(most are these days) and watch it on telly instead of the laptop

But that would involve climbing up on a chair, and trying to extract the broken DVD player from the TV and from underneath the PVR that sits on it!!

Not so much that, as I'm not a fan of heights (even a chair) and it requires turning a very heavy (one of the old, square box type, TV round to get at the cabling. Then pulling the DVD player out from under the PVR without dropping the PVR!
