Sorry, this photo is a bit blurry. Took this in Costa Rica a couple of years ago. The hopper was the length of my hand. What is not in the photo is the little green snake in the red plant nearby keeping a beady eye on the hopper.



The green snake is on the left side of the plant, sort of blending in with the green background.

Poor guy,not only is he not getting any...he'd better move quickly to avoid becoming lunch as well.

Few more dragonflies,this time in flight.
Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta).
These are called paardenbijters in Dutch,which translates as horsebiters,which is based on a bit of a misunderstanding.
The farmers thought that the horses were reacting skiddish to the hawkers,instead of to the bot- and horseflies,which were in fact attracting the dragonflies as prey.



Sadly i dropped my cam today,quite badly damaging the mount on the body alas...
Hopefully it will be fixable!

How did you get those amazing dragonfly shots?! They're gorgeous! Sorry about your camera. Really hope it's fixable too.

I saw the biggest fly I've ever seen in my whole life yesterday. Bigger than any horse fly I've ever seen on the farm. I'm trying to think of what to compare it to - two bumblebees? I could see all it's face parts clear as day. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a picture. I think I was in shock. Only had the camera on my phone so it probably wouldn't have turned out well anyway.
