I'm not generally a fan of flies but the iridescence on that is lovely.

The other day our niece found this caterpillar in my sister in law's garden. It is a sphinx but not a gordius. It was a sphinx ligustri or privet hawk moth according to the clever bods at the Natural History Museum who identified it for us. I've never seen such a large caterpillar before. And that spike on its tail is scarey!

Cheery!! I definitely would have freaked.

Joolz, cool picture. But, ick. I really hate flies.

Selkie that is an awesome caterpillar! The girls would love to find one like that.

I did. The above was the tame version for this cosy little family board. ;)

Few new dragonflies of late :
Black-tailed Skimmer(Orthetrum cancellatum).
Image
This is not one of my best shots, but given the rarity of the dragonfly in question it makes it a good one for me! :D
Scarlet Dragonfly(Crocothemis erythraea).
Image
Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta).
Image
And lastly one for the phobia'-angle... :P

Brilliant photos everyone :)

We get more than enough flies around here in summer to have a healthy disrespect for them, but that is such an amazing photo Joolz! The metallic sheen is truly amazing.

I am going to have to show your photo to my daughter Selkie, she will be green with envy!

I am also pretty amazed by the size of that 'little' critter Spideygirl, still he looks peaceful enough :)

...and I've always been amazed by your dragonfly pics Mycroft! Ours will be buzzing about again soon, so I'm going to have to try to get a decent picture (again  )

And it is probably just as well you had Mr calm and collected there with you cheery_j ...I would have only screamed and the ant would have promptly run back in for cover!
