How long is TOO long for a book/story?

Wow...never thought I'd see an Irishman publicly slam his nation's most famous literary son...that's almost like a Brit calling "Hamlet" a soap opera written by a first year drama student.

Difference being Hamlet is good and pretty much all of Joyces stuff is overrated drivel.
Besides I think Oscar Wilde or Jonathon Swift had a much bigger impact on the writing world

I am not bothered about the length of a book, if I get gripped by the story I read it, if I don't get gripped then I stop reading it, however long the book is.

But I suppose my point is it all depends on the reader. If the reader is enjoying it then they won't mind the length. I personally was getting bored reading LOTR, even though it's a very good story and my sort of interest, as he is too descriptive for my liking
