Went to the Lifeline Bookfest yesterday, spent a fortune on bargains, as usual. Amongst the books that I got that I had never read before, I got Fahrenheit 451 (in tribute to the deceased author), The Caves of Steel, How to Build a Better Life by Stealing Office Supplies (a Dilbert book, in case you're wondering), and this beauty...

I've been looking for this one for a long time. :D Doctor Who: The Dark Path reveals how a Time Lord and old schoolfriend of the Doctor's, Koschei, became the Master...

Koschei? As in Koschei the Undying, of Russian folklore? That would fit the character.

Yes. I didn't know you were familiar with Doctor Who. Or the Master. But yes, the Master, in the novels written before the new series began, is called Koschei before he became evil. He appears as Koschei in The Dark Path and flashback scenes in Gary Russel's Divided Loyalties, as well as a parallel version of Koschei still in the service of the Time Lords appearing in David A McIntee's The Face of the Enemy. In that book, they also mention the real names of other Time Lord enemies of the Doctor, like Magnus (the War Chief from The War Games), Ushas (the Rani), and Mortimus (the Meddling Monk, although he was actually named Mortimus earlier, in the New Adventures novel No Future). This was when they were still at school together, along with Drax and 'Theta Sigma', aka the Doctor.

I haven't read The Dark Path yet, although I have skimmed over a synopsis of it. Here's one here if you're interested: http://www.drwhoguide.com/who_ma32.htm

I think it was because he was so similar to Jon Pertwee's Doctor in many ways. They both had a sort of sartorial elegance, and if anything, the Master was more polite and affable (most of the time, anyway) in that incarnation than Pertwee's Doctor. He even had a sense of humour (in The Sea Devils, he playfully calls the Clangers an intriguing alien lifeform, although the joke is spoiled when his ally tells him that the Clangers are puppets).

BTW, it's Delgado. Sorry, Tony, I am a pedant.

In addition, Delgado played Hugh Conrad, a journalist, in Quatermass II. The scene where he gets taken over is a bit melodramatic, but well done, and it's strange to see this guy who played an excellent villain play a more normal role.
