Tarkovsky (spelling?) is a seriously underrated director. I love the spooky atmosphere he generates. In fact it could be argued that Stalker is all atmosphere and not much else.

I was also going to vote for Barbarella but that is definitely all style and no substance.

I agree about the substance not being all that much.
However...if the number of times watched counts...

Two lines i somehow seem to have etched in my mind,have nothing to do with my age at the time and the 'prettiness' of Jane Fonda of course.

I'm thinking of fantasy films like, LotR and Harry Potter type films as well.

I say stick strictly with sci-fi. adding fantasy would broaden to options WAY too much i feel. (i know a few of my choices would change if that were the case)

then

then.. oh, it's making me mental!

because I felt it gave the most realist view of the future.

My choice isn't a movie - Firefly. Serenity is the Firefly movie, but I can't say it's the best ever even if I love it.

I don't think the greatest sci-fi movie has been made yet, as I mentioned somewhere before. I think the genre is still wide open for true greatness, but topping my list at the moment is
