I used Noteflight, which is a web based notation program. It produces an output based on sampled instruments. So it will never sound as good as real ones performed by musicians, but in the absence of an orchestra, it's fun to play with. I am slowly teaching myself a little about composition. The top link is the Noteflight web app. There is a free account with limitations, but it still works.

It depends on the program. i've heard plenty of pieces composed entirely on computers that sound (at least to me) as good as anything recorded with real instruments. lol but those programs do tend to be pricey i've been tempted to try demos for different ones but always concerned about the limitations.
