Crudely put, gender is what's between your ears, sex is what's between your legs.

Ideas around Sex and Biological fact are actually in general a cultural construct as much as gender is.
Biological "fact" has been used to enforce cultural identities and role.
Try reading Michel Foucaults History of Sexuality (its three volumes so its a bit of a task but worth it)
Bilogical "facts" and science differ from culture to culture so the link between gender and sex are not as wrong as you might initially think. Sex is as much based on what is between your ears and gender at least starts with what is between you legs.
