Help with a riddle, please?

Postby Smack » Sat Mar 03, 2012 8:54 am

Hey all,

I'm participating in a scavenger hunt and have been given a riddle to find the next set of clues. The riddle says that the next set of clues can be found at "the returns of Chrysler's cruiser, in the year of the original Rich Brook fall. [1891] (Which is on Rincewind's unspeakable level of the Jewish star-sun.)"

Unfortunately, I've only read a single Discworld novel, and that was many years ago. One of my close friends is a fan, though, so I know Rincewind is a failed/incompetent wizzard (Wizzard?). My friend, though, didn't know what the clue was talking about. It's possible that it's referring to a very obscure or off-the-cuff line/subplot.

I was hoping, though, that you lovely fans would be able to help! I don't expect anyone to understand the first bit, but hopefully someone out there will know what on earth "Rincewind's unspeakable level of the Jewish star-sun" means.

If it helps, the video with the full (melodramatic and, I'll happily admit, rather annoying) riddle can be found here: http://sbreichenbach.tumblr.com/

Thank you all in advance! I really appreciate the help.

The only thing coming to mind at the moment is the number 'eight'. In the Rincewind books, the early ones at least, wizards of all kinds avoid even saying the word 'eight'.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I'm drawing a blank.

By the way - the video mentioned "the melody". If it is referring to the the tune played during the video, it is: In the Hall of the Mountain King (Norwegian: I Dovregubbens hall) a piece of orchestral music composed by Edvard Grieg for the sixth scene of Act II in Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, which premiered in Christiania on February 24, 1876.

I don't know if that is any help? :)

Good luck.

It might possibly have something to do with the Red Star which appeared in The Light Fantastic.

I'm not sure where the treasure hunt is being held. US? NY? So here are some thoughts to play with...

Rich Brook is a reference to the Reichenbach Falls, I'd guess, and some tall building may be involved (Chrysler?) because the reference to Rincewind as a wizard and to something unspeakable leads me to think of the number 8 which is considered unsafe to be spoken by wizards. (Rincewind is full of back luck ... Or ultimately good luck depending on how you look at it) so he definitely wouldn't want to say the number out loud.

So.... My guess is that the reference to Rincewind's 'unspeakable level' is to Level 8 in a building. As I don't know where you are, that's about as far as I can go in a short time.

Any help?

Oh, and the Star of David (Jewish Star Sun) was retained by Chrysler after they took over from the Dodge brothers who originally used this as an emblem...I think... So,if you are in NY, I'd head to the Chrysler building 8th floor sign in the lobby (or something like that).

The only other thing I could find is 1891 Suburban Ave., St. Paul, MN which was a former Chrysler dealership at a street number that matches the Reichenbach Falls date and relates to a company that used the Star of David, but I'm not sure what there is in terms of levels there that might give an 8.

 Sorry! I can't resist puzzle things usually and this gauntlet was just too tempting, so I was a boardie on a mission. Mr Totty kept being told 'Shhhhh, I'm working something out!' his response was:  :?

Anyways, now I want to know what the real answer was!

Funnily enough, Tony, I believe Miss Marple's name is Jane... How spooky is that? :shifty:

Oh, Toothy, you came to the boards much too late. You missed the quizzes pooh used to do. You would have loved them. (Or were they done on the board you were on before, too?)

Well, I did originally join in 2008, but then got carried away on the Harper Collins (HC) forum and slightly side-tracked on the Cunning Artificer's forum, so couldn't spread myself far enough for 3! When the Harper Collins board went to the Message Board in the sky, I returned to this as our new main home. So, you're right, LilMaebe, I missed Pooh's quizzes, sadly. :( We did have some on the HC forum, so there was something for me to get my teeth into (so to speak! ;) ).

I'm a keen cryptic crossword and Scrabble fan and love number puzzles, too. I suppose it's my way of keeping my brain as active as possible. :)
