Do Not Feed the Trolls!

Postby Tonyblack » Fri Sep 05, 2008 1:46 pm

Hi all - we are currently having a LOT of trouble with spam posters and hopefully we'll be able to sort that out soon.

In the meantime we are moving the threads and deleting the posts and memberships as quickly as possible.

I just want to point out that if you post on one of these threads, your post will disappear along with the original. So don't bother posting anything profound! If you want to draw our attention, a PM would probably work better.

Hope this doesn't go on too long - I've just deleted NINE porn threads started by one poster!

Does the forum software support visual confirmation registration? (I can't remember having to do it when I registered, sorry if I did)

That can really help cut down on the spambots.

Sorry I thought they were just spam-bots. I did tell a couple to 'sod off'.

At the moment there are some problems with the registration process that we hope will be fixed soon.

In the meantime, if there isn't a mod online and stuff like this gets posted then there's nothing much we can do until we do come online.

This is a family forum and stuff like this doesn't belong here. If people really want that sort of thing, then it's not hard to find on the Internet (so I've been told  ).

My thanks to Tony for taking over today.

Lisa and I have spent most of the day in the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Lisa, my wife, is 33 weeks pregnant at the moment and started experiencing a lot of pain today which was coming in regular phases. We saw our GP who sent us the the hospital for check ups.

The long and the short of is is that Lisa was eventually given some pain relieve some five hours after getting to the hospital.

This has obviously meant that I have been off-line for most of the day. Amazingly it seems to me that the moment I get pulled away these nasty people pop-in and fill the forum with horrible junk.

Tony and I will continue to combat this the best we can but the person at Transworld who is responsible for the forum is on annual leave at the moment. We will get things sorted as soon as possible.

Sorry to hear about Lisa and I hope she's in less pain soon and the everything settles down.

As to the spammers - I think they were waiting until you were gone!

Sending more GOOD THOUGHTS FOR YOU AND LISA! AND THE BABY TOO!

Hope that the pain meds work and that things calm down until the child is born--because after that you're going to be on your your own :D although I'm willing to share Tony's time on the computer.

Is it possible to get a temporary moderator in a different time zone? I know Tony is going to be in one next month but there is hell of a lot of crap/unsuitable posts being made while this forum is still new and shiny.

As I post, a troll has spammed every section of this board in the last 10 minutes and most of it seems to start after 10pm (GMT)

For the time being until we can resolve some issues with versions of the message board software that the forum is based on I have taken the action that I must approve all user registrations before users can post. While this initial delay is unfortunate for valid posters it should hopefully reduce a lot of the nasty posters that we get.

I would like to add that until you are sure that a member is genuine (they've posted on the board about relevant subjects) do not open links to websites that they may have in their profiles.

Some of these contain viruses or bugs that will try to update your computer's hardware to 'phish' for your personal details.

If in any doubt DO NOT OPEN A LINK.

I think we have another troll, judging by a link their profile. nicdd joined today and has a link to something you often see spam advertised on forums, not porn but I wont "bring it up"* in polite company.
I only happened to notice since I've been looking out for someone in particular to join.

nicdd, if I'm wrong then I apologise in advance, though I'd be surprised if I was.
