To be honest, that kinda ticks me off about Terry (the different covers thing). It really does smack of moneymaking, and taking the fans for a ride.

Nobody is making anyone buy the new versions. It's up to the individual and the bank account whether they buy these.

Ah come on. A release of new covers is like crack to these poor DW addicts. This is preying on the weak!

It may be because of the way Esk is holding the staff.

One of my correspondents recalls that he interviewed Terry in 1987 for a university magazine. In that interview Terry said that one thing which had tickled him about Josh Kirby's artwork for the Equal Rites cover was that it subliminally (accidentally?) reflected the Freudian overtones of the book (references to "hot dreams", the angst of adolescence, things that might be called "magic" envy)... Kirby's artwork "coincidentally" draws Esk with the broom handle where a penis would be (traditionally supposed to be the basis of the "witches flying around on broomsticks" myth).

On a note: Something I always liked better about the Kirby covers compares to Kidby's work:
They actually gave you an idea what to expect. They were cluttered and not everyone's style, but while reading didn't you at least once had the feeling -hey, that's what was on the cover and this is too-

While I love the Kirby covers, I think that his 'cariacture' style became increasingly outdated as the books became more serious. I'm trying to imagine what Kirby would have done with covers for Night Watch, Thud, and Monstrous Regiment, which have more 'serious' themes than most of the books he created covers for. His "everything and the kitchen sink" style wouldn't have worked as well with these books.

Though one has to wonder...the new covers might not be 'caricature-style' but they are all parodies or plain posing. NW has the painting, MR that scene from was-it-WW2?, GP had Star Wars, while Thud, MM, UA and Snuff are rather generic pose-shots/character shots, some of them (UA and Snuff) even waking false hope for the story (Confess, folks, how may of you WERE looking forward to see Luggage play football or have Vetinari as referee?).
Make of that what you will, though.
