We've been getting our Shakespeare on.
I'm a nerd, bite me.

So I got my daughter to watch Orson Welles's Othello, the best to my mind.
Not the full play, but scary-weird. Iago in the cage is unforgettable.
She liked it enough to watch the whole thing on youtube.

Henry V with Kenny B. Now, his Hal is just downright cute, but his delivery of "The Speech" is without parallel.
Unless, Derek Jacobi played Henry Five at some point.

Hamlet. Oi. Why are there so many and why does every actor try to behave like --at least look like-- Olivier?
Ok, not Derek, never Derek.

Perish the thought of but Mel Gibson as Hamet but his "words words words" speech is probably the best rendition.
He is truly deranged. But we only found that out, later.

Derek Jacobi as Richard II, BBC production. I love this film.
First watched it to 'help' me with the tempo and meter (school, what else), but it's wonderful. Richard was such a putz. He almost manages to get a grasp of humanity at the (his) end, but reverts to form, ends up whacked on the head and dead.

I think that Ron just shaves it, but it's a close call.

Dog Soldiers is a fantastic film. Flippin' hilarious!

Mel Gibson is the best screen Hamlet I've ever seen - better than Olivier (gasp!), and way better than Branagh. Although Kate Winslet was also the best Ophelia. And Branagh really made Henry V his own (I had it on tape & wore it out).

I was lucky enough to see Derek Jacobi & Robert Lindsay on stage some years ago in Becket. Standing ovation, natch.

Agreed that Gibson was a very good Hamlet if Hollywood-ish Hamlet.
Yet how many saw the film only to read the play? Then read more plays and see more plays.

The Matre promptly wore out the tape.
