Eccellente Pen!
I think you had a good eye on all of those shots. I'm guessing you were packing some pretty serious hardware in order to get those shots? I know you did talk about it a little bit.

Really nice photos Penfold :) ,but was the moon added into "Nightime Rocks!",because there looks like a pitch black circle of background around the moon then it becomes a different shade of black suddenly. It looks unnatural to me. :?

Nice pictures Penners :D

Agree with Shadow, the moon looks a bit weird in Nightime rocks

Oooops! It was and well spotted! I was practising with photo manipulation (something I haven't tried before other than correcting exposure and levels) and I posted the wrong one on here.  I'm now hoping I entered the right one into the comp! :?

I WON!!!!!! :D :D

Actually, I won the Intermediate Category for "Catching the Rays" but lost on the overall contest to a Beginners photo of two young boys playing conkers. That photo was brilliant, btw, and a worthy winner (hopefully I'll be able to put a link to that one at a later date - it really is something special and its very difficult for my description to do it justice).

The judge, himself, is a respected ex pro photographer and was a quite hard marker although he also gave very good advice on where a photo went wrong or could be improved. (My other photos scored 17, btw.) I definitely learned quite a bit from his comments. :D

At the moment I am rather overchuffed and on a high that such a critical judge was so complimentary about the photo and its many elements; most of which I have no idea how I achieved, if I was to be completely honest, although I could 'see' the shot there.

On a final note, the picture has been retained for display in the town's main shopping centre and for entry into an inter-club competition against a rival town's camera club. :D

So sorry I missed this, Penfold. Jolly well done, excellent photo's.
Best wishes,
Tiff

I just got back from the comp and although "Batty's Tree" got through the first round, I didn't make the top three. "Catching the Rays" was knocked out by a penguin! The judge did have very positive comments about both photos, however. :D

Time for an update now I've gotten caught up with the rest of you. The judging was last Tuesday and I got the following scores (out of 20):

"The Moon's a Balloon" 17
"Night-time Rocks" 18 (joint 3rd place with 8 others, although this was in the top three of the 18 scores having been held back for the final viewing.)
"Nightbus to Nowhere" 19 (joint 2nd with one other photo)

I'm well chuffed with the result as this was an open competition and I was competing against the very experienced photographers, some of whom are almost semi-pro standard and with a couple of ex-pros thrown in for good measure! :D

If you want to check out what I was up against, CLICK HERE FOR PICTURES from the comp and then double click on the first pic under the "[Show as Slideshow]" header to get the slide show up (Don't bother with the header itself, the link doesn't work). BTW, once you've seen one page, you have to come out and click on the next page and start again from the top. I shall mention this at the next club meeting as it could be a real pain later.

It's that time of the month again where I have to think about which photos to enter for the next competition. The photos will be displayed by projector, rather than print, so the images will be quite large when displayed. I've whittled my choices down to seven contenders, of which I can only submit three but, as usual, I cannot decide on which three.

1. Winter Wonder (Chiff Chaff and Geranium Flower in February)

2. Early One Morning

3. The Rock

4. Dewy Doe

5. He's Behind You!

6. Can't Afford a Lawnmower?

7. Mist Reflection

Any suggestions for your favourites would be most welcome and very helpful, since it has been your good taste in the past that has got me my best results. :D

Decisive today! :P 2,3 & 4

I do love Mist Reflection but I think you do need some colour in there to give a little definition to the ambience? As a composition it's perfect, but B&W whilst being atmospheric, can't give you the range of contrast that even a little colour wash effect would bring in that would help 'lift' some of the detail? I'd be v. interested to see the original colour shot of that to see if it did have more impact :)
