Today I learned about the Wilhelm Scream.

This is a sound effect that was first used in the early 50s of a man screaming. It was used very often in lots of TV and movies productions and has now become a cinematic sound cliché, with some directors adding it because it is so famous.

Ah, yes. Even the makers of Dragonball Z Abridged have got in on the act.

You can blame George Lucas for that.


And there's another famous scream, sometimes mistaken for the Wilhelm Scream, but it is actually the Howie Long Scream.

Shaken, but not stirred. It was kind of cool, actually, in the same way that getting drenched with rain spurred by a hurricane decimating the coast a thousand miles away is cool. If you're not in the "eye," it's more of an experience than a calamity.

Did it arouse you? I'm asking because I read in this book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aztec_(book)) that earthquakes do that (when they're not killing you, that is).

For 15 years I thought it was kind of cool to be in an earthquake. You think, wow, I could have died, but I didn't. So now I realise my own mortality and I'm going to do the things I want to do and not be afraid because I've just experienced a near death moment.

Then the biggie hit Japan in March, and that and the aftershocks screwed me up big time.
There were aftershocks most days, but a couple of weeks after March 11 there were big 4 big aftershocks on one day, all bigger than the Washington quake, all of them knocked things over in my house. There were times in March when I honestly thought if I went to sleep, I wouldn't wake up again because I'd be crushed to death in my bed.

Hence my 2 month sabbatical. I was a tad strung out.
