Complete b*****ks. Charity shops are the main reason for the decline in the secondhand bookshops you used to see all over the place. They pay little if any business rates, are backed by large organisations especially Oxfam and their chain of specialist shops, and don't pay for any of their stock so can undercut people trying to make a living in any business they decide to compete against.

My home town now has 9 charity shops so anyone tring to go into business may as well give up now.

Is it OK I use both Mad? I go to a lot of 2nd hand shops and charity shops, although there are more charity shops I have to admit.

I recently brought books from a charity shop, ok, it6 was Oxfam, and they wanted £4 (for a two volume encyclopedia). I offered a £5 and told him to keep the change! He said he couldn't accept it, it would throw the till out. I told him to put in £1 'misc' and he said he couldn't, they didn't have a miscellaneaous (or however you spell it) button. As he clearly didn't want my £1, I and went into another charity shop nearby, there are 7 at the last count in Pocklington, and put it in the greyhound re-homing collection box!

Oxfam can be really stupid sometimes!

Charity shops have to be realistic. If they want to sell the stuff they have, they have to put prices on that people are likely to pay.

If they had put the going price on that book, they probably would never have shifted it.

Some of the shops are getting wise these days and selling things on eBay.

I rarely buy anything in Oxfam. Not because I don't agree with their charity, but because their stuff is usually overpriced.

Most charity shops have a box on the counter where you can put an extra voluntary donation - that would have made sense in your case Meer.
