Well, I'm not so sure it WAS a joke.
What I find fascinating is that Rowling (Hah!) had a talent to create likeable characters yet at the very same time came up with Snape (ok, he had something going for him(, Rita Skeeter and Dolores Umbridge (did you know that "dolores" is Latin for pain (actually plural, pains) -certainly caused me some).

Girls don't buy books??? All the books-eating readers I know are females!
At the moment I can't think of a single man I know that loves reading books..

Hiding her own gender using only the initials... you know, it's the first time I think of it like that. I've always known who she was, so never paid attention to it.
I remember a woman did the same thing when she was writing for Star Trek:TOS, using her initials to hide that she was a woman from the public who wouldn't accept sciencefiction from a woman!

Same here, I don't know any man who actually reads a proper book.

I knew she was female too & never thought she was hiding her identity.

My favourite character from the books was Luna. It's a shame there wasn't more about her in there.

I love Luna. She's fantastic. And in the movies they capture her brilliantly.

Probably for the reason stated: boys don't like reading about female main characters. I know a Dutch children's author (female herself) who does the same for that reason.

You are wrong there Tris, one of my favorite female authors Kim Harrison has a strong female protagonist in her Hollows series, or is it you have not read across the spectrum broadly enough or for long enough.

Sorry. I meant that generally, that's what happens. Some boys think that girls (in books or movies) "can't fight" and they're just supposed to sit around waiting for some prince to rescue them. Honestly. It's ridiculous.

Actually some boys enjoy reading books about girls leads.In my case I've enjoyed reading Twilight(before it got rubbish),House of Night,The Secret Circle,My Secret Admirer,etc...
