Someone wrote an article about the Harry Potter (or as they call it: Hermione Granger) series.
It's somehow interesting, but I really don't know what to make of it:

Probably for the reason stated: boys don't like reading about female main characters. I know a Dutch children's author (female herself) who does the same for that reason.
Sad but true.

I liked that. My oldest was a Harry Potter fan BIG TIME! (shades of obsession). We used to talk about Hermione always bailing Harry out. But then she was an overachiever at school too.... so.

Then again.... Penny was always getting Inspector Gadget out of the poo too.

At the moment I can't think of a single man I know that loves reading books..

Hiding her own gender using only the initials... you know, it's the first time I think of it like that. I've always known who she was, so never paid attention to it.
I remember a woman did the same thing when she was writing for Star Trek:TOS, using her initials to hide that she was a woman from the public who wouldn't accept sciencefiction from a woman!

There's an episode of Deep Space Nine (Far Beyond The Stars) that covers this problem. They have a woman writing for a pulp Sci-Fi magazine using her initials to hide her gender and a black man writing about a black captain of a space station and his story being refused because it would be unbelievable to white people.

Yeah, I remember that one too. Nice episode, where you could see all actors' real face, what's under the alien mask
I was referring to D.C. Fontana, who wrote some of the early episodes. She's actually Dorothy Catherine, and now i've seen her in some "star trek special", but at the time, she had to use that 'trick'. And the sad thing is that is not all men's fault, but mostly other women's .

Well in the past it was common for a woman to write under a male pen name as women would not be accepted as serious writers as everyone knew women had no brains.

Famous examples include:
George Eliot - real name, Mary Anne Evans
Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, who we now know as Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë
A M Barnard - Louisa May Alcott
Marion Zimmer Bradley had four pen names, three of which were male
George Sand - famous for being Chopin's mistress - real name Amantine Dupin
