If it has all the numbers Dotsie (just in case Mad is not online)if the 1 was missing itt would then be a 2nd printing of the 1st edition. although some start at zero to nine 0-9

OK, so what would a second edition look like?

I can't give you a screen shot as my books are still boxed,it would be the same as Mad's but the number sequence would be: 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 and so on the lowest number would be that print edition, if they ran zero to nine the number sequence would be: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 in a straight run and again 0 would indicate 1st /1st, hope that clarifies it for you.

Nope I just don't see the difference there between 1st edition 2nd printing and 2nd edition. But thanks anyway.

Dotsie the 2nd edition is a compleatly new print run with a new ISBN if another publisher issues it or when the print run for that book has run/sold out , if the number sequence starts with 2 that is still a 1st edition but a 2nd impression/printing.

Not the ISBN, you are looking for a list of numbers such as

3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2

The lowest number indicates the edition. These will be on the same page as the ISBN which is why you were pointed at that page.

On the back of my 'Eric' book is that ISBN number then the only other #'s are the barcode and a smaller barcode with '00299' on top of it?

If you defintely got it in 1997 then it is almost certainly the first edition because it only came out on the 6th November that year and they printed 120,000 of them, making it the most common of the hardbacks.

It should be printed by Gollanz, the book club edition didn't come out until 1998, and there will be a series of numbers somewhere on the page that includes the ISBN which must have a 1 at the beginning similar to the example shown below

Open the book, near the front you will find a page like the one shown above. Then look for the series of numbers counting up towards the middle of the series and read the lowest number.

Spidey on the spine at the bottom does it have the publishers name on it or inside where THE IBSN is.
