I Shall Wear Midnight wins Nebula Award

I Shall Wear Midnight has won the 2010 Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy at the Nebula award presentation last night (May 21, 2011) in Washington.

Since this is the final book of this series (the earlier ones of which are clearly young adult) it's appropriate that the Nebula Award (for Young Adult) goes to I Shall Wear Midnight. But I think it could well have won in the "adult" category also. I think this is the best book Terry has written -- though I have lots of other favorites. But in terms of philosophy, satiric humor, writing style and taking this character through the stages of growing up--this is a superb book.

If you haven't read it already, rush out and get it. And 3 cheers for a well-deserved recognition.

I don't agree with either assessment. I don't think it's Pterry's best YA book (I still think that Wee Free Men is a far deeper and better book), nor anywhere close to his best adult work. But it is a very fine book in its own right and it's great that he won the Nebula, which tends to gravitate more toward SF than fantasy books.

With ISWM being the last in the Tiffany series, I'd like to think that the prize recognised the whole series. I have no idea if that's what the judges were thinking though.

It's a beautifully written book and, judged against the other contenders, like for like, obviously excelled in the eyes of those who made the award.
It's quite possible that they didn't take anything else into consideration at the time nor would it or should it make any difference whether or not they had read the previous three books in the series.
Sometimes it's just GOOD to take something at face value.
