I have just finished Nation...

I just finished reading Strata...and was disappointed. Not actually bad, but mediocre compared to Pratchett's later works.

it definitely shows how far he progressed as a writer.

Not to mention blatant self-plagiarism. Like that 'sue my face for slander' joke that later made its way into The Colour of Magic. The imagination was there, to a degree, but the plot and characters? Ugh...

I gave Strata 6.5/10, which basically means 'mediocre'. Good Omens I gave 8/10 to, which means 'above the norm'. Unseen Academicals I gave 8.5/10, which means 'get it now'. Nation was 9/10, or 'a keeper'. And I Shall Wear Midnight got 10/10. Nuff said.

BTW, I gave these books ratings because I read them for a book-reading blog that I did on another BBS.

I wasn't bothered about Nation, for the same reason as Quatermass - it wasn't DW and I was disappointed as I had been looking forward to reading a new DW book.

If PTerry wrote the same thing over and over he wouldn't be PTerry, he'd be Piers Anthony.

Well, a Piers Anthony who could actually write.

And was funny.

And wasn't obsesssed with teenage sexuality.

I liked Nation, even though it's been some time since I read it and can't much comment at the plot atm..
FIrst I was disappointed, though, because it was not a DW book. I just knew there was a new Pratchett out and put it on my wishlist for christmas.
Never ventured out of DW (as far as Pratchett is concerned, of course) before, but after that book I think I might as well get the other non-DW books.

Anyway, I liked the anti-religious and anti-war stance of the book and it was embedded into a nice story.

wow, i had an existential moment reading Nation. Not just because there's so much stuff in there about what we believe but also because the first pratchett book i ever read was carpet people, his first book as far as I know, and it was like reading the same book by the same person but with 30 odd more years of life experience. Then to top it all off there was the announcement that he had early onset alzheimer's, which is a national disaster all on its own in my opinion. And then, if you look at his pic on the dust jacket you'll see its the only one with him facing away from the camera. I cried for days!

I think Nation was a brilliant book but I didn't like Strata or The Dark Side of the Sun I thought they were not the worst books but definitly not the best but they were good enough

I recently reread it and loved it just as much as the first time I read it.

I tried it awhile ago but just couldn't get into it.

But I had one unused Audible credit, and since Stephen Briggs is reading it I decided to download the audiobook version. Might like it better that way.
