Commander Vimes was patrolling Treacle Mine Road when Carrot ran up to him.
"Sir! Constable Meme's been murdered!"
Carrot was about to say more, but Vimes was already running towards the Watch house. Carrot caught up just as Vimes reached it.
"You're not going to like it, sir.' Carrot stated. Vimes went in nonetheless.
Meme lay in the centre of the locker room, a dagger in his back. There was a piece of paper stuck on the dagger. Vimes ripped it off.
"Oh, no..."
The paper had six words on it. It was hard to read them, because of the blood, but Vimes could make it out:
"Release Burnham or you will pay"
Vimes had arrested Lord Burnham three days earlier after he had found out that the Lord had put spies in the Watch. Technically, the Watch shouldn't interfere with the Upper Class, but Vimes had had enough. If they messed with his Watch, they would pay.
He had thought something would come up from it. He hadn't expected murder.
"Sir, it was in the Watch House. It must have been a Watchman."
"Damn. Send me all the watchmen who were in the Watch House at the time."
"Okay, sir." Carrot turned to leave,
"Oh, and get Angua too. We're going to need her nose. Make sure she's disguised; we don't want to have an easy target for whoever's done this."
"Right, sir."
