Round world "imitations" of Discworld

When I saw this story, which I am copying rather than making you look for the link, I couldn't help but think of the scene at The Bucket in which Angua is taken hostage by the thieves (or for that matter the jewelry store robbery where she holds the thieves til they confess). From today's Odd News.

'Dumbest criminal' nabbed in cop convention holdup

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A retired police chief said he was robbed by "probably the dumbest criminal in Pennsylvania," at a police officers' convention on Friday morning. John Comparetto said as he came out of a stall in the men's room, a man pointed a gun in his face and demanded money. There were 300 narcotics officers from Pennsylvania and Ohio at the gathering.

Comparetto gave up his money and cell phone. But when the man fled, Comparetto and some colleagues chased him. They arrested a 19-year-old man as he was trying to leave in a taxi.

The suspect is also awaiting trial on four previous robbery charges.

The suspect was arraigned and taken to Dauphin County Prison. When a reporter asked the suspect for comment as he was led out of court, he said, "I'm smooth."

Actually, a man just got released after 27 years in prison, after he admitted to over 100 crimes. The police (obviously Colon was in charge) picked the one they fancied & locked him up. DNA evidence was "misplaced" for the last 11 years, but he's finally out.

To be honest, he was only unfairly locked up for the last 11 years, as the DNA evidence went missing.
I don't feel totally sympathetic towards him, as he confessed to the murder. At the very least, he wasted police time and they stopped looking for the real murderer.
Perhaps people who crave attention and like to confess to crimes they haven't done, will think twice if they believe that they really can be locked up for a long time?

And there's the tradegy - the real crook effectively got away with it.

Yes Batty, but he was clearly not right in the head, and the fact that he confessed to over 100 crimes kind of made it all look a bit suspiscious, don't you think? If the police had any sense, they wouldn't have stopped looking. And I don't think in this case the thought of a long sentence would have stopped him, since he still claimed to have committed the crime whilst in prison. It's only now that it's obvious it can't have been him.
